Possible solution:

Go to Start > Run and type in: devmgmt.msc
and press the Enter key. After the Device Manager
window opens, scroll down to your DVD
drive, click the "+" to expand, then right-click on
your DVD Drive and select Uninstall. You will
be prompted to reboot your computer, so reboot
and Windows XP will reinstall the DVD Drive.

1. Open XP's "Help and Support Center"
2. Type DVD in the search box, hit enter.
3. Click on "DVD Troubleshooter".
4. You probably need a new DVD decoder or reinstall the one you had.

Already tried that Carey. I have same problem with XP SP2. Dell Inspiron
6000 Laptop with TSSTcorp CDRW/DVD rom (TS-L462C DE01). Removed drive
numerous times. Reinstalled (repair files) WinXP. All knowledgebase articles
on this problem refer to udfs.sys and a hotfix for the problem. Hotfix is
unavailable without contacting support and will be charged for it if out of
warranty period (as is my case). Dell does not have a fix for this and
refers back to MS. About to go bald over this (from pulling hair out). Do you
have any other suggestions ?? Thanx in advance.

I removed the DVD drive from the computer and replaced it with a drive known
to be working from another computer. XP did not recognize the new drive or
attempt to install drivers. Do IBM allow the istallation of non IBM supplied
Hardware in their machines ?

I would say it should. But haven't worked with IBM's in long time so don't
know for sure how their proprietary setups are.

I had a look at MS site they say that XP SP2 should fix the problem however
the problem started after I applied SP2
