DVD/CDRW Combo Drive Problem

I have a problem installing hardware and games throught this drive. It seems
that it doesnt recognize the CD's. They are the regular CD's. I can put in
DVD's and DVD games in and run just fine. Since it is CDRW too, shouldn't it
be able to play regular CD's too? Is there a program that I need to download
or anything?

FWIW separate lasers are used for DVD vs. CD so that could be the
problem. Think of it as being half broke.
