DVD/CD RW

We have installed a DVD/CD RW Sony DRU-510A on my
husband's computer and his WIndows 2000 won't recognize it
as a drive.

The hardware read out from the computer boot up says it is
there and on my hardward profile it says it is there but
it won't read anything nor is it posted on MY COMPUTER.

What are we doing wrong with this?
