I am using a Sony DVD RW DRU-510A and it will not read
any DVDs or CDs but if I set the computer to boot from
the DVD it will read and load the operating system from
the CD. After I reboot from the hard disk it will not
read any DVDs or Cds.

Since that model DVD was designed after XP was written, the
drivers for it probably need to be installed from a CD to
your hard drive.

Sony instructions are hard to find on their website (in my
experience) but there should have been a CD with the drive
and an instruction sheet.

Are you using Windows XP sp1? Did you install the software from the CD that
came with the drive? I have this same drive in my computer and have had no
problems with it at all.
