DVD-RW no longer recognizes DVDs

My Sony DRU-510a DVD writer no longer recognizes DVDs. I can still read and
write CDs and the device manager properly recognizes the drive but when I put
any dvd in the drive, Explorer will pause and then prompt me with "Please
insert a disc into drive". I have tried removing the device from device
manager and it will get recognized properly after a reboot. I have also
updated the firmware for the drive. I have SP2 running...

This won't help you, but just for info my DVD ROM on my Toshiba notebook
does the same thing. No problem with CD's but does not see DVD's. I've
tried everything w/o luck.

Please let me know if you have any luck. I am having the same problem with
my internal HP 400i DVD Writer. It does not recognize any DVDs.

Hi. Keep me posted. I have the same problem with my HP internal 400i DVD
writer. No program can recognize a DVD... included in this list include
Power DVD and Explorer. Arg. I am on SP-1.

I have done this several times on my computer, with no success. I almost
wonder if we uninstall SP2 if it will work. Mine seemed to work fine until I
updated windows.

OK, looks like a common problem. My older Pioneer 115 as well as some
generic DVD-Rom that came with the computer have the same problem. I
use it as a CD ROM everyday but they both refuse to acknowledge DVDs.
This problem started when I upgraded from 98 to XP.
