HELLO AGAIN...

FRISTLY TO THOSE WHO NOTICED MY EARLIER POST, THIS IS NOT A REPEAT POST BUT A DIFFERENT HARDWARE QUESTION POST REGARDING MY CD/DVD COMBO DRIVE.

I'M TRYING TO INSTAL A NEW HARD DISK ON A NOTEBOOK.
OBVIOUSLY IT NEEDS FORMATTING...
SO I PUT THE XP DISK IN AND SET BIOS TO BOOT FROM CD-ROM...
THE CD-ROM IS NOT RECOGNISING MY XP DISK AND IS NOT BOOTING FROM DISK..
SO I AM GETTING ERRORS DUE TO NO INFORMATION BEING ON THE HDD..

MY QUESTION IS THIS...DO I NEED WINDOWS INSTALLED TO UPDATE/UPGRADE THE FIRMWARE ON MY CD-ROM DRIVE?

THE DRIVE DOES WORK, I HAVE BOOTED FROM KNOPPIX LIVE V4 & BART PE.
ITS JUST NOT RECOGNISING MY XP SP1A DISK THAT CAME WITH THIS NOTEBOOK.
I AM TRULY STUCK, PLEASE HELP!

thanx in advance.

Perhaps this cd-rom needs a boot disk? If Knoppix works fine, it does seem strange that the WinXP CD-Rom doesn't work.

It is an original CD-Rom isn't it?

Long winded solution?

yes, i have the original windows xp sp1a cd that came with the notebook.

I'm baffled as to what to do next....
I am currently considering installing windows 98, if that works and I can successfully partition the new Hdd, the maybe the notebook will then recognise the xp cd-rom ( it is strange that the notebook does recognise the xp cd-rom when logged onto an xp system, but not to boot from!!) and I can then re-install xp...

Long way around the problem, but thats the only solution I may have at the mo...

Nope, that don't work either..

It seems the windows 98 cd-rom is not recognised either...

Does my hard disk need to be partitioned before installation of any operating system?

Knoppix may have worked because its a LIVE installation, run straight from cd-rom via ram..

So maybe, I'm thinking aloud here, my hard disk needs some sort of preparation before the system will attempt to read the opearting system boot disks??

That can't be right can it?

If knoppix boots, it should at least boot from Windows XP. Just to clarify, does it do anything when you try to boot from the WinXP CD-Rom?

No

Nope, I just get a whirr sound of the cd-rom spin, then it goes quiet...

Error messages then appear:

PXE-E61: MEDIA TEST FAILURE, CHECK CABLE

PXE-M0F: EXITING PXE ROM.

...this just repeats itself on the screen...

I ran a test in bios on the HDD and it passed the short and long test...

The HD is definately there, I think the problem is the cd/dvd combo drive...

Problem solved!

Hiya, just to finish off this thread with an update...

I managed to format my new hard disk, but only by using an external usb adapter on another laptop to format from within windows...

This still didn't solve the problem of my cd rom drive not recognising the official windows xp recovery disk.
On using another windows xp disk, I discovered that the drive was not faulty at all, and the disk was recognised by the drive instantly and went on to install windows xp. So the problem was the xp disk itself. For some reason, the disk would not initiate its auto install unless inserted and recognised from within an already installed windows platform, not on boot... Maybe this is a disk protection issue, and being a recovery disk was created in this way. Though this makes no sense to me at all....

Anyway, I borrowedt another xp disk which installs fine. Problem solved!

Thanks for your support.
