DVD/CD Burner Install

My DVD/CD ROM died (or so I thought). I had a couple others in house and
tried them but none of them worked. Then I realized that Vista just stopped
recognizing the device.

In My Computer, the drive does not even show up, no matter what device I
tried. I played with all the jumper settings(switching from slave to master
and back) and switched the ribbon cable out and Vista will try to install the
ATAPI driver and says that it failed. I sent the problem to Microdoft for
review, but who know how long that will take.

I can't even put in a disc to try and install the driver the ROM came with.
I figured that my drives were all dead since they are all about 2-5 years old
and that it is a disticnt possibility. I bought a new one from Circuit City.
Made sure it was name brand (Memorex DVD dual layer with all the bells and
whistles). I still get the same errors.

I went to Memorex's website and downloaded the driver directly from them to
see if that would help. Windows will not allow me to install the driver
saying that I "Do not have Administrative Rights" to install that program. I
get that message about half of the time I try to install something.

I am the only user created on the machine and I am the administrator too so
I have no idea how I do not have administrative rights to complete that
action.

I have no idea if that would even work. Shouldn't Vista install the basic
ATAPI driver to get the drive working so that I can install the correct
driver from disk later? I can't even put in the install disk to try and
install again because the drive does not work.

Can anyone please help with any or all of my issues?

Thanks everyone!

I read some other people had similar problems. Unfortunatly I cannot try the
same thing as them. I have a DELL computer with only one IDE controller
which I have my slave/archive drive and my DVD burner on so I can't switch.

When you install a program that says it wants administrator privileges, right
click on the .exe and click run as administrator.

I had the exact same problem with my 2 dvd writers I found updated firmware
for both my dvd writers when I tried to flash them
Vista wouldn't allow me to update. I believe I solved this problem by
flashing the firware for both dvd writers using Xp Pro operating system I
then reinstalled the Vista Os with the newly flashed writers and they both
appeard in Computer and in device manager they showed as both functioning
properly
So far the drives haven't disappeared in 48 hours heres hoping what I did
will help the rest of you solve your dvd devices problem. Let us know how you
make out
As far as the administrator problem when you go to install a program or app
right click it and choose run as an administrator that might solve that
problem
Sincerely Bcs4

Supposedly one of the best overall is the NEC ND-3550A. If
you search Froogle you'll find several for around $30.00.
