DVD burners show up as CD-Rom in windows explorer

I have two dvd burners and both of them show up as cd-rom drives in windows
explorer. They work fine and it's not really a big deal, but I would like to
know what the reason for this.

The Secret

I noticed that the same thing happened when I installed a DVD Rom on my
sisters computer. What I did not know was that windows will change the
name of the drive according to the media placed inside. Try putting in
a DVD and see if it changes the name of the Drive to DVD ROM.

My sister had Nero installed and it was running all the time in the
background. I can only imagine that Nero took over the allocation of
the drive names according to the media inside.

Do you have Nero Installed?
Tell me what you find out.

Hope that helps.

Dont fix what aint broken. You can only get yourself in a bigger mess by
trying to fix a cosmetic issue.

if the Shell Hardware Detection service is not running (disabled), then
DVD drvies will show up simply as cd-rom drives - they still work just
fine tho. This service isn't really necessary, especially if you hate
AutoPlay.
