My new dvd internal multiformat dvd writer(TDK 440n) won't write DVD+RW. I
don't have any problem with other formats like DVD-R and cds. When I try to
write to a +RW I get an error message and the disc pops out before anything
is burnt to it.

I've done the usuall basic things tech support tells you. Upgraded firmware,
upgraded software, reinstalled software, tried different brand media. The
problem exists nomatter what software I use, and most give similar error
messages (which I'll post at the bottom).

I am running Win XP home on an AMD Athalon 1.2Ghz, 512 MB RAM. Drive is on
its own IDE channel. Thanks for any help. This is driving me crazy.

Oh also I just tried moving the drive over to a different IDE channel. It
got some better results, but still not working properly. Now some data is
written to the disc, but an error always results and the files are
incomplete. It also gives me some new error messages which I'll post. Thanks
in advance for any suggestions.

Did you check the master/slave jumper on both drives on the channel?
It's one of the things that tech support should walk you through, but
you didn't mention. If a drive is alone on a channel, the "usual"
behaviour is that it defaults to master, no matter what the jumper
says. (The quotes are because it's not standard behaviour, so it's
not guaranteed to do this). However, when two drives are on the
channel, if both are set the same, you can get all sorts of weird
behaviour.

Of course, it's also possible that you got a lemon. With all mass
produced electronics, the frequency is low, but you do still get the
occasional defective one. It's possible you got lucky -- or unlucky,
however you want to look at it. Try the drive in another computer,
just to be sure it's not some piece of software on the system that's
throwing you off.
