My brother's new DVD burner (a Digital Research DVD±R/RW) originally showed
up in Explorer. Now, it doesn't. However, if one changes the drive letter
from D: to F:, it does show up. If you set it back to D, it shows up until
the Explorer window is refreshed, after which it vanishes. If it's give the
name of F again, it continues to show up. It always appears correctly
during POST, and it always appears in Device Manager (DMA is set to "DMA if
available). The computer has only one HD on the primary IDE controller, and
this burner is the second optical drive on the primary. It's a Dell
computer, so it's jumpered as "cable select" as is the CD-RW that came on
the machine.
What keeps this drive from appearing when it's labeled "D?"

Thanks,
Ron

Use TweakUI - one of the XP Powertoys from (if you have installed XP
SP1)
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

If you have not installed SP1, the earlier version can be found at
http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

Once installed you will find it in Start - All Programs - Powertoys for
Windows XP

Its My Computer - Drives page I think you will find that D is unchecked,
so as to be hidden in My Computer/Exp;lorer. Check it and Apply
