DV-AVI - Types 1 and 2

MM2 makes type 1 DV-AVI files and MM1 makes type 2.

Apparently most software, with some exceptions. can handle either type. I'm looking for two things:

1 - What are the software packages that can't handle one type and need the other. So far I have only two:

- Pinnacle Studio 8 needs type 2
- IrfanView's multimedia utility that saves each frame as a BMP can only do it with type 2

2 - When looking at a DV-AVI file, how does one tell which type it is? I haven't seen it listed as part of the properties in any of the viewers that I use.

Vegas Video 3 works with Type-2 DV files. Vegas 4 works with both Type-1 and Type-2.

Thanks a lot Digger,

It's sinking in a bit. I updated the bottom of the Saving Movies... General
page of www.papajohn.org

I went with the Microsoft way of the clues to use to tell the difference
between a type I and II DV-AVI file when looking at it. Everyone can look at
the properties, but not everyone has GSpot.

You're right about the confusion. We all talk about types I and II as if we
can easily tell them apart, but other than you and Microsoft, I didn't get
anyone else who knew how to tell, and who would respond with some helpful
info.

Hmmm...good info. Wish I had thought of it myself. I sorta gave up using
the advanced summary tab when I began working with mpeg layered encoders.
The info you have provided, via MS, will no doubt prove helpful to us all,
and you sir, deserve a medal for all your continued patience, perserverence,
and willingness to help others.

Thank you for all of your continued hard work and good will,

Does this only work in XP? If so, mentioning Digger's GSpot technique ;)
would be useful.

The note I got from Microsoft mentioned checking in XP, but didn't say it
was limited to that. I'll see what is looks like in Windows 98 and add GSpot
if needed - or expand the method to include others. Maybe people with
Windows Me and 2000 can help here.

And thanks for the note Digger!!

PapaJohn.
