Tip: VirtualDub Can Now Handle Type I DV-AVI Files

Version 1.6.0 of VirtualDub can handle the type I DV-AVI files from Movie
Maker 2... but it saves DV-AVI files as type II.

Hi Papajohn,

Its good to know that it is now possible directly. Perhaps worth mentioning
too that there was a simple work around previosuly... and which still works
for many unsupported formats such as WMV...

Workaround: Use AviSynth engine and its DirectShow filter.

Install AviSynth if you do not already have it (http://www.avisynth.org/).
Make a text file in the same folder where the unsupported video is located
and rename the file to have an avs extension. Now edit the text file in
notepad and include following line:

DirectShowSource("unsupported.wmv")

(Obviously use your own file name.) Save the text file and then from
VirtualDub use File->Open and select the avs file instead of WMV.

AviSynth also works well for opening RealMedia, Quicktime and many other
foreign formats.

Since the avs format is essentially a scripted language itself, it may also
be easily called from within the VDub batch process, which enables one to
readily apply predefined templates (boilerplate, a.k.a. rubber stamp) to
large numbers of clips as a near real-time preprocess to VDub; crop overscan
artifacts, remove screen crawlers, format conversions, color corrections,
etc.

Add the advantage of custom scripting to the VDub/ AviSynth mix, and one
could almost fully automate an entire class of production processes,
including the insertion of title clips, credit rolls, 2 second black leader,
a/v fade-in/ outs, joins, and a host of other routinely applied standard
effects.

Thanks Rehan,

I had tried using WMV files as sources to AviSynth, but hadn't been
successful... must be because I didn't use the DirectSource qualifier....
I'll give it a test.
