Duplicate messages using Auto-Archive with IMAP

I

Ian Oliver

Having got Outlook 2003 auto-archive to work with an IMAP account (see
replies to post titled: How to make Auto Archive work with IMAP?) I am
now finding that auto-archive will duplicate the messages every time
it archives.

The reason seems to be that when messages are archived they are only
'marked for deletion'. So on the next archive it will re-archive these
messages (unless I purge the messages marked for deletion).

My aim was to automatically archive all my IMAP account messages on a
regular basis. The 'feature' that re-archives deleted messages makes
auto-archive completely useless.

Anyone know a way around this one?

If I were in your shoes, I'd just create a rule that copied messages from
the IMAP store and placed them in local folders and then run that rule
manually every now and then. I don't know of any way to automatically purge
IMAP folders. Perhaps it can be done with a script, but someone familiar
with scripting will have to say.

Thanks for you reply. Building on what you said, one way would be run
the auto-archive say once a month manually after first making sure
that all the folders are purged. What sort of script were you thinking
of to do the purge? I could build one using VBA but I don't think the
Outlook object model has a purge method.

Like I said, I don't know scripting. I can only imagine it's possible, not
state with certainty that it is nor recommend a method. Others who are
familiar with scripting read this group and the group
microsoft.public.outlook.program_vba may be a resource as well.
