Duplicate Icons in Control Panel in XP Pro

G

Guest

I have the same problem as above except I have 4 Network Setup Wizard Icons &
4 Wireless Network Setup Wizard Icons. I would like to get rid of the ones I
don't need. I have looked at the answer provided for the above question and
been through that, however I don't have duplicate .CPL files in the System 32
Folder, they are all unique, so not sure where the extra icons are coming
from. If I double click on each icon they open up the correct wizard, so, I
am now not sure what else I can do.

Hi,

Based on my knowledge, control panel loads any file with the .cpl
extension. If an existing .cpl file is copied to a new filename and
maintains the .cpl extension, Control Panel will read both .cpl extensions
and display duplicate icons and labels. Therefore, this issue because there
are multiple cpls with the same content.

Please go to c:\windows\system32 and run dir *.cpl

check how may cpls you have. On my side, I have 24 cpls. How about you?

thanks.

Hi Mark,

I suspect they are name unique only, right?

Try to execute them one by one to see if they open the same window.

thanks.

Hi Vincent, been on holiday, so not been able to reply. Anyway, NO, that's
the problem, as I said in my last reply there are 4 Network Setup Wizard
Icons in the Control Panel, each one when you open them up goes to the
Network Setup Wizard. There are no duplicate files, just duplicate icons, and
I would like to get rid of 3 of them but I don't know how to, you can't
right-click and delete them. I don't know why they appeared in the first
place either.

It might be due to duplicate files, with a different name, of course. See
the following page for more info:

Hi Mark,

Thanks for your reply.

However, I was confused. As you said, you found 27 cpl file under
c:\windows\system32, then, why you cannot delete some of them?

When I copy a cpl file at that place, I do see duplicate icons in control
panel and when I deleted it, the duplicate icon disappeared.

Thanks.

Hi Vincent, you were correct I did find 27 .CPL files but each one of them is
unique and valid and I have checked to make sure that they are not the ones
that are duplicated. As I have said, it's the Network Setup Wizard CPL ICON
that is being duplicated 3 times nothing else !

Hi Ramesh, thanks for your reply, I have actually been to you website and
have a copy of the software in question. However, it's not working in my case
as it does not find anything that I can sort out (I did follow all
instructions).

Mark,

Option 1: Do a search for .CPL files in your entire drive (not only the
System32 folder). See if there are any CPLs with the file size of 25KB. That
may be it.

Option 2: Right-click one of the duplicate icons in the Control Panel, and
click "Create Shortcut". A desktop shortcut to that applet will be created.
Start Notepad, and try opening the "Shortcut to Network Setup Wizard".
Notepad will display the actual file name and path for that applet.
