Is there a simple way to search for duplicate
files/documents on your hard drive?

http://www.cequal2000.com/products.htm and look for Duplicate files manager.

There are utilities for that purpose, but eliminating dupes is done at
your peril, and can bring nasty results to the uninformed.
Some dupes are needed.

ditto. Quite often apps want/_need_ to see a specific .dll in their own
folder even tho the exact same .dll exists in the windows folder.
