Duplicate Contacts in OAB/ Contacts

T

Tazman

Hello, we have just migrated our workgroup of 1000+
employees from Outlook 98 to Outlook XP, which has gone
relatively well.

One problem, when creating a new email and you look under
the Outlook Address Book -> Contacts, duplicate Contacts
are showing.

For example, 1 contact card with the name of Mickey Mouse
shows once with just his email address. A 2nd Contact
card with the name Mickey Mouse shows with just his Fax
number. When you go to just plain ole view 'Contacts',
there is only one Mickey Mouse Contact card and he has an
email address and FAX.

When addressing an email from the Outlook Address Book,
Contacts, it is frustrating to 2 see contact entries for
the same person and to ot know which contact card to
select without scrolling to the right, to see if it is
the emaill address or FAX number.

Any advice?? Thxs in advanced!!

Then they aren't duplicates. The standard behavior for the Outlook Address
book is to display all electronic addresses (both fax and e-mail). That
behavior cannot be changed. The only way to prevent the display of fax
numbers is to store them in a different field or to disguise them (e.g.,
precede them with an alpha character) so that Outlook won't recognize them
as phone numbers.
There are also a number of utilities available that can do this for you
automatically. Some are listed here:

Thank You for the information, I have been playing with
the utilities.

By the way, they may not be duplicates to you or I....but
they are duplicates to most standard end users who go to
the Contact list under the new OAB for emailing. We are
trying to make Outlook work for the standard end
user....not high end computer users like most of us using
this board.

Speak for yourself. I'm no high end computer user. I'm one of those easily
confused end users.

I know what you mean, though. We've been complaining about the Outlook
Address Book for years. Just look at the number of posts in this group alone
from users confused by its format and behavior.
