dumprep.exe

I have a dos window opening during booting of my computer, the window is
labeled C:\Windows\system32\dumprep.exe then another window opens with a
label of 16 bit msdos subsystem and the message in this window is
C:\Windows\system\dumprep.exe
The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction
CS:053c IP:011 OP:8e fa 7b cc Se Choose close to terminate the application.

I choose close and the windows close and the computer seems to operate
normally. I would like to get rid of the extra step in booting my computer
though.

The computer is running an AMD Athelon 1.4 Ghz processor with 512 megs of
ram and xp home version.

Hi John,

Sounds like a problem with the virtual dos machine (ntvdm.exe). Boot the
system and delete ntvdm.exe from the system32 folder, then reboot. System
File protection will replace it with a new copy from the cache.

If it doesn't help, then we need to examine what is invoking it to run
during startup.
