Granddaughter's computer (running XP) at boot:

A DOS window pops up displaying-
"C:\WINDOWS\System32\BCMSM136.exe
The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction
CS:OdcO IP: 0112 OP:8f 90 8f 94 96
Choose "close" to terminate application"

All suggestions welcomed (in 1 syllable words, please, as computer 1000+
miles from here and fixes will be passed-on).

If Kelly's suggested Google search proves too obscure, the file BCMSM136.dll
(NOT exe) appears to be related to the installation of a Broadcom modem. If
the error message really refers to an exe file, scan with updated versions
of Ad-Aware and Spybot S&D to make sure that there's no malware masquerading
as a legitimate file. Otherwise (or maybe also) check with Broadcom support
and/or uninstall and reinstall the modem drivers.

Thanks, Lem (and Kelly). The file shows as .exe.
I had done a Google search and the results were the same as Kelly's link.
Nothing there seemed 'on point' except one reference to running Spybot and
one identifying an unremovable VBS virus; one forum entry offered a link to
BCMSM136.exe removal but it proved inactive to me (and to someone else who
had participated in the forum of Sep 2004). No joy!
More solutions solicited, thanks.

Modem involved is dial-up only and this latest trouble follows the inability
to send email in OE altho receiving email and accessing internet using IE is
possible.

Spybot S&D, AdAware and SpywareBlaster have been recommended in attempt to
'clean' out this item so we can proceed with solving the OE 'no send' matter
which continues.
