Hi i have a problem my computer opens every 3-5 mins a dummyapplication in
the taskbar it has no name and have a window as icon its not good when i play
a fullscreeen game i where'd kicked to the windows.
Can anyone help me?
Thanks in advice Blizzard

I am experiencing the same problem on my Dell PC. Every 5 to 10 minutes a
program icon with a blank white square on it will fleetingly display on the
taskbar(only lasts for a half second or so and then it's gone). It causes me
no problem during normal computing operations but when I'm playing a full
screen game (e.g. Myst V) it minimizes the game to the taskbar, and
frequently when I re-mazimize the game the sound is hosed up; necessitating
closing and restarting the game. I haven't a clue as to what causes this but
wanted to let you know you're not the only one with the problem.

You a malicious program (virus ad-ware, spyware, etc.) you need to use some
anti-spyware
anti-virus apps to find and remove it.

May be the problem but I don't think so. I'm running Norton Anti virus,
Norton Personal Firewall, Spybot Search & Destroy and Microsoft Anti Spyware.
I want to think it has something to do with Windows XP constantly checking
in, looking for updates, etc. It may even be Norton checking in, who knows,
but it surely gets to be a hassle. Anyway, I really appreciate your taking
time to post back. Thanks alot.

I use Spybot Search & destroy and I really like the app, but ..
No 1 app (or its developers) are aware of or capable of dealing with every
threat to your system.
Use more then 1 anti-malware app, you'll find many posts in this ng that
contains suggestions
on which are considered to be good.
Spybot S&D and Ad-Aware SE appear to be the most commonly recomended.
Get both & update the definitions for both.

The same goes for anti-virus programs.
When you suspect a virus, use multiple AV resources, since you have Norton
AV, you should
also try an online virus scan, many offer such for free, and you should
check out
mcaffe & norton's offerings

I also use Norton Av 2005 ( i have Norton FW but aint using it yet) and i
have
it's and XP's auto update features running, both run as services, and thus
they have no taskbar,
system tray or popup windows.

I'm 100% positive that what you have described, is the indicative of a
mal-ware infestation.
Something probably installed itself thru internet explorer, or you gave
something to be installed via
IE, that wasn't as safe as you thought.
Since you're not getting popup ads, it's probably an activity monitir (i.e.
It's tracking what websites you go to), or a key logger (maybe hoping you do
your banking online so it can catch your
online ID/password), or it's a trojan trying to connect to a remote computer
to let someone
have acces to your computer.
If you think i'm joking you should look for a recent post to this ng from
some poor person who was
sitting at his computer watching the files disappear from his/her hdd while
s/he watched.

The fact that you posted here about it, proves that you don't know what
program is doing this.
Which is bad, you must be familiar with every non-system app that loads,
otherwise, your
expensive investment (your computer) will be trashed before your very eyes.

When you're ready to take your problem serious (and your comp does have a
problem, anyone in
here will tell you that), then let me/us know. and i'm sure you will get
many, very good
recomendations on how to take back your computer.

Nope, I do not, but I do have an HP Photosmart 8450 printer hooked up to my
computer.
