dual XP partiions? & master/slave configuration?

QUESTIONS:

#1: Is it possible to have more than one installation of
XP on the machine at one time?
I've seen the tech notes on having more than one operating
system when they are different flavors of windows
(98/NT/etc.), but nothing to affirm having more than one
XP installation.

#2: does the designation Master & Slave on the drive
connectors have any real significance under XP? are there
performance implications if the faster drive is a slave if
there both using the same, older controller (ATA/66)? or,
is it just a designation like 0 and 1? The new drive is
much faster (spindle speed, cache and protocol ATA/133)
but, I understand protocol used is a function of the
controller.

BACKGROUND:

My first attempt to install a fresh copy of XP to the
first partition of the new drive resulted in the deletion
of the OS on the old partition. However, the fresh
install on the new partition retained the settings,
preferences, and links to the applications on the old
partition....definitely NOT what I expected....

So, my idea to start with a fresh partition, fresh OS,
uncorrupted and uncluttered with ages of legacy trash
((the machine started out as Win 98, then XP, then XP
Pro...not to mention all the junk and app trials
downloaded...)) didn't work out, but, should it matter?

Since the recent installation seems to be tied in with the
old stuff, I'd almost like to copy the new directories
back to the old partition, then, if I have to, physically
remove the drive, boot from CD, do a clean install on the
first partiton of the new drive, then, physically
reinstall the old drive where lots of documents and music
files, etc., reside.

there are a few preferences I wouldn't mind transfering,
but am OK to setup manually.

Any other suggestions regarding the process, or the
partitioning (sizes you like to use) dividing up an 80 and
a 20 GB.

THANKS IN ADVANCE

Yes, It is possible. Is it legal? There is some discussion on that in
the newsgroups.

You did an upgrade install rather then a clean install.

You can install XP on another partition, Then use the Files and
Settings Transfer Wizard to move some settings. I'm not sure if this will
affect installed programs. you may need to re0install them back to their
orginal locations to set the Reg Keys properly. Your Data Files would be
safe though.
there are a few preferences I wouldn't mind transfering,
