Dual Operating Systems – win 2000 and win xp

I am unable to install WIN 2000 along with WIN xp on my Dell Dimension 8400
with SATA drives because I get a “did not find any hard drives†error message.

Situation: I want to install a dual boot operating system on my computer. I
installed a new SATA hard drive as drive 1, successfully partitioned it into
two volumes, formatted both volumes NTFS, and made the volumes active by
assigning drive letters. I then swapped drive connections on the mother
board so the new hard drive became drives 0.

I attempted to install WIN 2000 and received a “did not find any hard
drives†error message. I went back and reformatted the first volume on the
new drive as FAT32 and tried again and got the same error message. I
succeeded in installing Win xp on the second volume of the new drive and can
boot successfully.

Help please.

SATA hard drives/controller do not seem to have the required device drivers in
order to allow Windows 2000 to see the hard drive. These drivers are required
to allow Windows 2000 to see the hard drives. The XP drivers probably will
not work in Windows 2000.

Look at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/learnmore/multiboot.mspx. It
doesn't mention a potential driver problem but doesn't discuss sata drive
either. Where might I find appropriate drivers?

If it's a Dell PC, then they should have the necessary Windows 2000
drivers for the SATA interface on the motherboard.
Also, for info, I have a separately installed IDE controller board with one
ata disk attached. While installing win 2000, it does not detect the
presence of the ide drive either. Tnx for the thought.

The manufacturer of the IDE controller board should have provided
Windows drivers.

With Win2k you usually have to install the sata/raid drivers by pressing F6
at the appropriate msg during the win2k installation, and installing from
'floppy'.
Most mobo set up/chipset cd's have a utility on them to create the Sata
floppy
Dell probably also have a specific download setup
I've assumed that sata/raid is on the mobo.

I'm getting closer to being able to load w2k but am not yet there. I now
understand the need to use the F6 option to install. But I cannot find the
correct drivers.

I visited
http://forums.us.dell.com/supportfo...ddrive&message.id=72532&query.id=46174#M72532

http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df-external/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=961

One can download files for a floppy disk to use at installation but none of
the choices provide for a 82801 FR SATA AHCI controller to access a volume on
the main drive.

Any further guidance would be appreciated.

My journey to the Dell site lead me to:
Driver (310 kb - a .exe file)
Intel Application Accelerator RAID Edition, v.4.5.0.6515, A01
and

Application (15 mb - also a .exe file)
Intel Application Accelerator RAID Edition, v.4.5.0.6515, A08
Release Date: 02/23/2005
Description: First Initial Release.

Issue 1: neither is recognized as a result of a F6 when loading w2k as w2k
is looking fo a txtsetup.oem file

Issue 2: I don't comprehend the difference between a driver and an
application and am reluctant to launch either.

Further guidance would be appreciated.

The exe file you downloaded is an extractable that creates the drivers on
the floppy
Though in some circumstances they may just extract, which would require you
to copy to floppy. So first place each exe in its own folder before
doubleclicking.

The raid/sata drivers would be in the 310kb file
The larger file 15mb would probably be some type of raid monitoring/setup
utility. You'd have to read any accompanying readme in order to determin
exactly what it is.

Finally had success. I ran the "application" driver program which created a
number of files including a readme. It led me back to the Intel site at
http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scripts-df-external/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=961
where I finally found the Floppy Configuration Utility (item #5 in my case)
that produced the required floppy disk to use with the F6 command when
installing win 2000.

Thanks to DL for your several replies that kept pointing me in the right
direction.

Did you actually follow the link to the dell site, and register, to
be
taken
to the download?
http://forums.us.dell.com/supportfo...ddrive&message.id=72532&query.id=46174#M72532
as apposed to the intel link
