Dual Monitors - Windows XP???

Using the 'Help and Support' in windows, I found the
following (I searched on 'install two monitors'

To use the multiple monitor support feature, you need a
PCI or AGP video adapter for each monitor. If you have an
onboard video adapter (one that is not a plug-in card but
is part of the motherboard) that you want to use as part
of a multiple-monitor configuration, it must be set as
VGA.

I was once told that Windows XP supports the use of two
monitors without having to install a second video card.

Nevertheless, that isn't strictly true. You can buy a dual-head
video card. It's essentially two video cards on a single card.

Matrox makes such cards. Here's one reference to them:

You don't need multiple video cards. A single video card with two outputs or
a tv out function will work fine.

All the "big boys" have them. ATI, Nvidea is a good place to start. I
have an ATI 9200 that does dual monitors and/or tv out.

Thanks, Phil. I've never really looked into this. I have two
monitors on two separate cards.

No prob. Ya that setup works fine too, but unless you have two agp slots
then one has to be pci. Since I game I need agp, so I got the ati dual
monitor version. Works great.

I had a leftover 15" monitor someone gave me, so I resurrected an
old single-head Matrox PCI card from a old computer than wasn't
being used. I ended up with two monitors without any cost. I use
my main monitor (19") for most things, but keep another
application or two available for quick use on the 15".

It's certainly not something I need, but it's a convenience that
I enjoy. And the price was right.
