Ok, My AMD 4400+ X2 has shipped. My Bios has been patched to support the new
chip.

My question is, can I just swap out the CPU chip without having to
re-install windows? The only hardware changing is the CPU itself.

Normally - yes.
May need to perform a repair install - but may not.

I've never tried this with the CPU, but it's worked for other hardware
devices on my system.

Go to Start...Run and type in devmgmt.msc to open the Device Manager - make
sure the show all devices box at the bottom is checked. Scroll through the
display until you find your CPU - then right click on it and select
Uninstall. Then shut down the system and replace the CPU. This should force
Windows to re-detect it.

Also, depending on the number of changes in your system it may force
re-activation.
