Dual booting

hi
i have a gateway laptop with windows vista home premium edition, it has a
intel 945GM chipset and it has 2 primary partition C:(system) and D:
I tried to make this system dual boot by installing windows xp by
booting of the xp cd and the laptop DETECTED the hard drive but i had
accidently my external harddrive connected to the computer
I wanted to install xp on drive D:
so i deleted D: during installation process which was showing a lot of
unusual space becoz it included the external hard drive space also in order
to have a partition space of my own choice.
i was prepared to delete my D: drive but this action deleted my external
hard drive which i was not prepared for and didn't continue that installation.
After a few days i tried to install windows XP on drive D: by booting of XP
cd it always gave me an error message "NO HARDDISK FOUND MAKE SURE YOUR
HARDDISK ARE POWERED ON OR CONNECTED OR YOU MAY HAVE TO RUN MANUFACTURE'S
DIAGANOSTIC TOOL" means it didn't detect the hard drive as earlier.
Hoping as a solution i did a clean reinstallation of windows vista by
running the restore cd but still when i wanted to make this system as
dualboot it gave me the same message as above .
I forgot to mention my computer runs perfect when i run it on vista it shows
the harddrive C: and D: but it doesnot detect hardrive when i try to install
XP by booting of the XP CD
Is it a driver i don't have ?
while installing XP why is computer not detecting the hardrive as it did for
the first time ?
how can i install XP on this system
I want to install XP on this laptop any way possible
somebody please guide me to sort it out i will really appreciate any help.

Mick asked a question you didn't answer. You are probably in need of
installing SATA controller drivers using F6

hi
oh i am sorry ,yes it is a sata hard drive where can i get sata controller
drivers and how do i do it using F6
thanks

You should look on the motherboard manufacturers site for the drivers for
XP. You will then have to extract them to a floppy drive and then within a
few seconds of the start of the XP install, there will be a message on the
bottom of the screen that tells you to hit F6 to install drivers. Follow
the instructions

Adding to John's advice; if you haven't got a floppy in your computer, put
them on a Memory stick

hi
i thank you for all this valuable information but what if i want to install
windows 2003 server evaluation copy which i have for my studies on mcse on
this laptop instead of XP,
Is it the same way by going to motherboard website and downloading the
downloading the storage controller of win 2003 server and extracting to a
floppy
and then fix vista the same way as XP is fixed which is mentioned in the
link you gave before
I appreciate your concern

thanks

Yes. You would follow the same procedure.

hi
i got the driver from the intel website coz my laptop has intel 945Gm xpress
chipset
i downloaded the driver on my desktop and then extracted it to my memory card
now when i install window server 2003 and press f6
it says
"setup couldnt determine the type of one or more mass storage devices
installed in ur system,or u hve chose to manually specify an adapter
currently, setup will load support for the following mass storage devices:
<none>
then it says
1. to specify additional scsi adapters,cd-rom drives,or special disk
controllers for use with windows PRESS S

2. if you donot hve any device support disk from a mass storage device
manufacturer or donot want to specify additional mass storage devices for use
with windows PRESS ENTER"

when i press S it says
"setup couldnot find a floppy drive on ur machine to load oem drivers from
floppy disk"
press esc to cancel loading oem drivers or press f3 to quit setup.

i already have memory card connected to the computer
but i get no results from there
what am i supposed to do please help

Read my posts. Before Vista, all Windows operating systems required a
floppy drive to install drives for F6. Your only other option is to
slipstream them.

J

John Barnes

Yes. Floppy (a usb floppy will work with some BIOS's) or slipstreaming the
drivers.

I have read in another group that this http://www.nliteos.com/ works,
otherwise you can Google for many articles on how. Personally I would just
buy a cheap floppy, and plug it in just when you need it, which is very
rare. A decent floppy and cable are <$10 and you can just store it between
uses.

do i have to use a external Usb floppy drive when installing XP for the
drivers coz that what i could find at stores .
please help
