Dual Boot

Hi All
I want to set up my old pc so that when switched on, can choose whether to
go into win98 or win2k. I have already partitioned my hard drive and have
win98 installed, what do I need to do?

Here are all the steps, assuming a clean install (blank hd):

1. Create Win 98SE boot disk.
2. Boot using this floppy.
3. Use FDISK to partition the space for Win 98 only
4. Run Win98 Setup
5. Test to make sure it boots to Win 98.
6. In Win 98, insert Win2K disk, run setup if necessary
7. When prompted about installation, select new installation, when prompted
about install location, select "Select my own partition"

Note: Win2K install will want to do an upgrade, replacing the Win 98
install, simply be careful and refuse the upgrade, it will do a
clean install.

8. When in partition selection of the new install, create new partition.
9. When in partition select again, create data partition. Must be FAT32 if
you
intend to share data space between Win 98 and 2K.
10. When back in partition select for install, select first partition
created
and press enter to install Win 2K there.
11. Select NTFS (preferred) for partition where Win 2K will be installed.
12. Proceed with installation as usual.
13. When installation is done, format data partition (if any) with FAT32
if you intend to share with Win 98, or NTFS if not.
14. Install whatever Service Packs there are (SP4 for Win 2K, SP1 for
Win 98- not SE)

Done. ;-)

Notes: You have to install what ever apps you want in Win 98 and in Win 2K
The two installs cannot share apps.

It is highly advisible to also connect to Windows update and get all the
critical
updates and install the usual anti virus. If you should have a firewall,
then
protect port 445 to guard against the sasser worm when connecting with
Windows 2000.

Since Windows 98 can't be infected, connect with this first, and get the
critical updates, etc. for this OS. Then download the necessary updates for
Win 2000. Disconnect and reboot into Win 2K. Install the updates without
connecting. People here at the ng have given instructions on how to down
load the updates, instead of directly installing them, but I could nto find
the
threads. I hope some one will give us a link or a repeat of the
instructions.

To get a good answer to your question, you need to provide
more information:
- Where is Win98 installed?
- Where (if at all) is Win2000 installed?
- What partition types do you have? (FAT/FAT32/NTFS)
