Hi, is it possible having winxp 32 and 64 on the same hd or system have to
be only x32 or x64 with no possible dual boot?
I triple boot XP Home, 64-bit XP Pro beta, and 64-bit Linux, so yes it is
possible for 64-bit XP to coexists with other OS's (and it runs 32-bit
Windows apps fine). XP64 included a 2D video driver for my video, and I
found an unsigned 64-bit nVidia 3D driver. It had no driver for my sound,
but I found an unsigned 64-bit AC'97 sound driver on realtek.com.tw. I
have not found a 64-bit driver for my controllerless modem (Windmodem),
but I have adsl anyway. The 64-bit XP Pro beta version I have expires 360
days from installation, but its partition can be read by other Windows
XP/2k versions.
CAUTION: Make sure you back up anything essential before installing 64-bit
XP. You may be safe if your partition table geometry is already
translated to 255 heads, but mine was 240 heads and 64-bit XP changed it
to 255 heads (which also changed cylinders), so 64-bit XP could not reboot
itself or XP Home until I repaired the partition table (recreated it with
240 heads and matching cylinders).
Note that I did not have Linux installed at that time. But Linux also
ignored existing partition table geometry and wanted to change it from 240
heads to 255 heads. But I recognized it, and prevented it from being
changed again.
So I am just curious if 64-bit XP Pro and some recent Linux versions use
the same openly available disk partitioning software, or just coincidence
that they both made the "incorrect" assumption that a large drive would
already be configured for 255 heads?
