My son is running XP Pro on his computer at school. The school system uses
Linux for his programming class but sometimes the system is down (no, say it
isn't so). I'm going down this weekend to see him and thought I would make
his system a dual boot system with Linux. Before I do that, does anyone
have any recommendations on how to set it up.

Thanks in advance,

XP should be installed first, and I would suggest when given the choice of
how to boot Linux, choose to boot from floppy. This will allow the current
XP bootloader to remain intact and if your son has trouble with the Linux
installation, it is easy to delete the partitions and reinstall without
having to deal with the XP installation.
LiLo or Grubb can be installed any time in the future if necessary.

Floppy is OK, but he has a multiboot setup. Is there a way to have the
boot.ini point to the LINUX partition. So far, it complains it can't find
the HAL, so it looks like it is Windows centric. I installed Grubb on the
first sector of the boot partition, but I haven't figured how to launch it
from the Windows boot menu. Do I need System Commander or Partition
Manager's boot manager, or can I do it from the Windows boot manager?

Thanks in advance,

The XP bootloader does not see the Linux partition.

You can't.

You need a bootmanager and why I recommended setting up Linux to boot from a
boot floppy. When you installed Grubb, it took over the booting.
