Dual Boot questions

Sure would appreciate some help with this-

I've got XP1 (drive C) and Win98SE (drive G) setup on a laptop.
Something happened when I overwrote some files in the root of Drive C:

Now the laptop will not dual boot. The initial screen comes up with the
menu to boot from XP or 98. If I choose XP all goes well. If 98 is
chosen a screen saying 'INVALID SYSTEM DISK" appears and it will not
boot.

Tried SYS C: (from a Win98 boot disk). Then the initial screen for 98
comes up (I've altered MSDOS.SYS so actually a menu appears allowing the
choice of Normal boot, Safe Mode, Network etc). When I choose Normal
boot Win98 loads fine ... but the XP boot loader was destroyed with SYS
C: (thus no XP menu).

Tried a FIXBOOT from XP recovery consol. Once again boot menu appears
for XP and 98 choices and once again XP boots fine, but 98 will not!
Seems like we're going around in circles.

What needs to be done to get BOTH to boot from the menu?

Windows 98SE
Windows XP Professional

Thanks in advance
Vic

PS: doing some web research and found no answers yet but think perhaps
because the BOOTSECT.DOS file MAY have been overwritten, that is causing
the problem. Not sure though ... anybody?

Most likely. I was going to post but since you already got the ball
rolling I'll just give it another kick!

To the OP:

Sys the drive again with the Windows 98 diskette and boot to the WIndows
98 installation and use the DEBUG command to recreate the bootsect.dos
file. To creat the file start an MS-DOS Prompt and navigate to the root
of the System drive and issue the following commands, pressing enter
after each:

debug
L 100 2 0 1
N C:\BOOTSECT.DOS
R BX
0
R CX
200
W
Q

That should create the file. Exit Windows 98 and reboot to make sure
all is ok with Windows 98 and that the file is present. Restart the
computer and boot to the Windows XP Recovery Console and issue the
following commands on the System drive:

fixmbr
fixboot
