In an attempt to repair Windows XP I loaded another XP and now have a dual
boot. It wastes time on boot and wastes space and I'm not sure what other
affect it has. Can someone tell me how to get rid of it safely?
Take a look at this web site, #20, I have two installation of XP on the same
partition

Here's Microsoft's take on the situation.
How to remove a second installation of a Windows operating system from a
partition

What it comes down to is you need to delete the extra Windows folder and then
correct the entries to your boot.ini file. An alternative approach to manually
editing boot.ini is to launch the System Configuration Utility (Start -> Run ->
msconfig.exe), click on the BOOT.INI tab, and hit the "Check all boot paths"
button. You'll be asked if you want to remove the entry that points to the
deleted Windows folder.
Good luck
