DSL not connectiing at DSL-like speed

Hi all...

Since my family replaced the router we were using (it apparently was broken
or something) my DSl is owrking, but it is connecting at less-than-DSL speed.
I have ran a couple connection tests and one says it's connecting at 70 k/s
and the other says 551 kb/s. It appears to be the 70k/s connection because I
cannot download fast at all - only around 30kb/s. Before we replaced the
router, I could download at around 180kb/s which is very fast. I need fast
download speeds like that because of the fact that I do a lot of downloading
of games and the link.

My connection has also been disconnecting itself randomly, I know it's
connected when I see a flashing amber light from the ethernet port, but
sometimes it just disconnects, and then I have to "jiggle" the cord many
times until it finally has the amber light go on.

Can anyone help me here? I want my fast speed again, I cannot tolerate a
slow internet connection at all.

Jared,

A bit more detail might help here.

Is the problem between you and the router, or between the router and the
internet? Are there other computers connected to the router, and are they
experiencing similar symptoms?

Have you tried testing between your computer and one or more other computers
connected to the router?

Have you tried using a different router port? A different Ethernet cable?

What model router did your family use? What model is it using now?

Wait, "jiggle the cord"?!? Seems like that's a clue. Replace it.
