Help me going crazy!

I am having problems since last Wednesday.
I have DSL Internet and the modem is working and all
cables are connected. I have called my DSL provider, and
they are telling me the problem lies within the computer
and operating system somewhere but not sure what is
causing the problem.

We have changed out the network card, the cables and even
got a different modem with the same result.

They can see me hooked up, but when I try to access the
internet, I get "this page cannot be displayed" message.
Can someone please help me!

I have Windows XP Home edition,
using a Cisco 675 external modem.

Thanks!

If you have a firewall or any other security software try turning it off and
then try accessing the Internet. If you are then able to access the
Internet, you need to adjust the settings in the security software or
firewall.

If you are using the XP Frewall, check the following Knowledge Base article
for information about disabling it:

I tried disabling the firewall in XP, that does not
work. We have tried everything...
One thing that we did notice is that when you try
to "Renew" ipconfig, we get an error ....Other than the
XP ICF, we are not aware of any other security software
on our system.

Please help us as we have been down for almost a week!

Do you happen to have any Norton Products? Have you installed Norton
Antivirus bundled from someother Norton Application such as Norton Internet
Security? If yes, that is likely the issue.

Beyond that, are you using software from your service provider. If yes, try
removing and reinstalling the software. Are you conecting through a router,
if yes, go step by step through your router setup routine, it's possible
that you are not properly set up through your router for conneting to the
Internet. Usually, DSL providers require a password and ID. If this
information is incorrect in your router setup, you will be unable to
connect.

We have been set up for over a year and all the sudden we
cannot connect. Everything seems to be working properly.
Our ISP can see us connected, but we cannot view anything
via the internet or get email. We continue to get the
error messages Cannot connect to pop server ...etc....

We do not have any Norton products on our PC.

Ordinarily, a pop server error message is indicative that your e-mail is not
properly setup but since you are getting a page cannot be displayed error it
indicates a problem with your overall connnection.

Since you can pinpoint this to last Wednesday, have you tried using System
Restore to take you back to a time prior to when this began? Start\All
Programs\Accessories\System Tools\System Restore.

We have been set up for over a year with no problems.

We did system restore twice, back to Tuesday, and then Monday of last week,
and that has not resolved the issue.

The ISP told us it was between the modem and the computer where the problem
lies, we changed the cable, that did not work either. We also changed out
the NIC card, and that did not work either. Until last week, we had not
experienced any other problems.

Is there anything else that I can do to find out what the problem is?

For whatever reason the computer will not allow us to
RENEW the ipconfig as instructed by our ISP.

We have not problems with dial-up, but our DSL will not allow us to connect
to the internet.

First, is there anyhing you can recall that you might have done, changed,
installed, removed, etc. just prior to the problem appearing.

Second, when you cannot renew IPCONFIG, it is often an indication that your
XP installation is damaged. Here are a few things you can try:

Go to Start, type sfc /scannow in the run box and press enter. Note, there
is a space between sfc and the forward slash. You will be asked for your XP
CD. Be aware, upon inserting the CD the XP setup screen may appear, this is
not a part of sfc /scannow, rather it is being invoked by autorun. Simply
minimize the screen and allow sfc to continue. Both this and the
information below assumes you have an actual XP CD and not a recovery CD.

If the above fails to resolve the issue, try a repair install as follows:

Be sure you are well backed up in case there is a problem from which you are
unable to recover. NOTE, while a repair install should leave your data
files intact, if something goes wrong during the repair install, you may be
forced to start over and do a clean install of XP. If you don't have your
data backed up, you would lose your data should that eventuality occur.

Boot from the CD. If your system is set to be able to boot from the CD, it
should detect the disk and give a brief message, during the boot up, if you
wish to boot from the CD press any key.

Once you have pressed a key, setup should begin. You will see a reference
asking if you need to load special drivers and another notice that if you
wish to begin the ASR (Automatic Recovery Console) depress F2. Just let
setup run past all of that. It will continue to load files and drivers.

Then it will bring you to a screen. Eventually, you will come to a screen
with the option to (1) setup Windows or (2) Repair Windows Installation
using the Recovery console.

The first option, to setup Windows is the one you want and requires you to
press enter. When asked, press F8 to accept the end user agreement. Setup
will then search for previous versions of Windows. Upon finding your
version, it will ask if you wish to Repair your current installation or
install fresh. Press R, that will run a repair installation. From there
on, follow the screens.

Thanks for all the information you have provided.
Unfortunately, we did not get the XP disk with our computer, we only have
the recovery disk.
Is there anything I can do to test our XP to see if it is
corrupt? We don't have an XP disk.

Failing that, are you connecting directly to your phone line or do you go
through a router, switch or hub?

S

SuperCyberstore

We connect via the Cisco 675 modem which goes directly into our phone line I
believe.

OK, then the problem is some corruption on XP. If you only have a recovery
CD, you are severely limited with regard to your options at this point. All
I can recommend is that you backup all your data files and run your system
recovery which usually wipes the drive and starts from scratch, then restore
your data.

NOTE, if you do a full backup that covers your entire installation, only
restore your data. If you do a full restore, you will likely restore
whatever is causing the problem.
