DSL networking problem

I have a client's computer with XP home. They had plenty of Spyware and
malware and 3 trojans on thier machine. I got spybot, mcafee and the like
running and cleand that stuff out. They have Verizon DSL using a Westell
modem. The connection in network connection looks fine excpet that it is
always disabled. If I try to start the connection. It stops immeidately. They
are connected to their modem via USB and the modem is green-lighted for both.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

If SP1, try repairing the winsock settings with WinsockXPFix.exe from:
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html

If SP2, "netsh winsock reset catalog" will reset the winsock catalog to
default.

Thanks Malke,

I ran that fix. I can ping 127.0.0.1 and localhost with no problems but I
can't ping anything outside. Any other thoughts?

Thanks again,

Thanks Yves,

But they have no firewall on the system. That is probably how they got all
of the spyware and malware.
