DSL initial connection takes a long time with XP

I just installed Verizon DSL service on my XP computer.
When I boot the computer the DSL connection is not on,
even though I specified "open when Windows starts" during
the setup. When I open IE, I get an hourglass for a few
moments, then that disappears. After another minute or
so IE will open and my connection is fine. Every time I
have to open the connection, I go through the same delay.

Verizon's tech support tells me that this is an inherent
problem with the way XP works. The connection are great
once established, but the dealy is getting really
annoying. Is there any fix for this?

Thanks.

try going to blackviper.com and getting his safe services registry
mod. There is one for home and one for pro.

I think there is a service that you don't need that has to read your
retinal signature before it sets up the network ;)

Your description of the way dsl starts sounds spot on for home user,
consumer dsl. It doesn't have anything to do with XP or Win98, but
rather it is the way the dsl service is structured. For instance, here
the dsl provider SBC calls it "instant on" which is a euphemistic way
of saying it isn't "always on" like cable. So the connector program
will have to start with Windows and go through the whole connection
thing. Once connected, you can stay on all day and not get kicked off
like with dial up, though. If you want dsl that is always on, you have
to pay a lot more than $30/month for it, like a business.

That said, you certainly should minimize the amount of programs/services
running with XP. Here are two useful sites:

right click local area connection and goto properties and then highlight the
tcp/ip and select the properties button and check use the following ip and
put in what ever you want for an ip for subnet mash put 255.255.255.0
