dsl does not work with laptop

Have a Toshiba Satellite laptop about 2 years old with WinXP. DSl

working 1 day next day not working, also the dialup does not work.

Haven't made any changes or install any applications in a long

time.

Laptop came with

1. realtec ethernet
2. atheros network adapter
3. ac97 datafax softmodem

On the dsl modem are 3 lights that are lit and no dialog box telling

me that I'm not connected to the internet. When I try to access a web

page, the activity light on the moden never comes on and all I get

is a "IE cannot display webpage" page. The dsl modem does

works because I'm using it with my desktop to send this message.

Any help or ideas on why my dsl with the laptop doe not work

will be appreciated.

the modem and the
laptops network card
are two separate components.

if your modem isn't working
then you need to contact the
your internet service provider
to check the status of your connection
and or help you reset your modem.

if the modem is working,
then your network card
would be the next thing
to check.

however, my guess is that
your modem may need to be
reset and your internet service
provider should be able to
help you.

also, check out your modems
manufacturer website for any
unannounced updates.

My guess is the laptop is trying to connect wirelessly to a DSL modem that
does not support wireless connections.
Have you tried plugging the laptop into the modem with cable????

If it's a PPoE or PPoA connection, it needs to dial a specific number to
connect. In that case, you'll need to install the same software from
the DSL company as you installed to the Desktop.

Also try these.

Flush DNS

Click Start, Run, type:

IPConfig /FlushDNS [Press Enter key]

NETSH

Click Start, Run, type:

netsh winsock reset

Press Enter key

Restart the system

You can also try this software download from a working machine:

LSP-Fix

1. realtec ethernet

*** Network adapter that requires an Ethernet cable
2. atheros network adapter

*** Wireless adapter -- requires wireless (802.11???) signals provide
usually by wireless access point / router
3. ac97 datafax softmodem

*** Old style telephone (POTS) analog modem. Uses "dail-up" telephone
lines

How are using the DSL unit? Is is wired directly to the "desktop?"
What type of wire?

If you want to "share" the DSL between the desktop and laptop, look at
getting a router with the same level of wireless signals (802.11??)
that Atheros network adapter can do.

Thanks for all the fast responses. A little clarification on how

i've been using this dsl connection.

1. Prior to the laptop stop working, The desktop (win98se) and

the laptop (winxp) would work using the same dsl modem. I would

move the RJ45 cord from one computer to the other.

2. I do have a wireless router and prior to the laptop stop working

the laptop would work using the secured wireless connection using the

same dsl modem.

3. Today the laptop connects to my secured router which is connected

to the same dsl modem, but I cannot complete to a web page.

4. Using the RJ45 cord with the laptop to the same modem, can not

complete to a web page.

5. I get no indication that the dsl connection failed. No dialog box

or no error. I just can't complete to a web page.

Sorry for this long message. Thanks for any more help
