DSL Connection Problem

J

John Harris

I have two new Dell Optiplex SX270 PC's (WinXP Pro SP2) and a Dynalink
RTA300 DSL Router. After a period of inactivity on the Web it seems as
though the computers lose their connection to the Web. They can still share
files and folders but they cannot connect to a website until I run the
ipconfig /renew command. I have turned off all power saving functions
(including the ones specifically for the NIC) but the problem seems to
continue.

Any help would be appreciated.

Things to check in your troubleshooting:

1. Is the computer 100% virus and spyware-free?
2. Swap out the ethernet cables.
3. If there are enough ports on the router, try different ports.
4. Connect a pc directly to the dsl modem (taking the router of the
equation) and use for a while. Does this fix the problem? If so,
replace the router.
5. If #4 doesn't change anything, try a different NIC in that computer
(unlikely that this is the problem since you have 2 computers with the
same symptoms, but I mention it for thoroughness).
6. If the problem continues with one pc connected directly to the dsl
modem and #1 is true, contact your ISP to test/replace the dsl modem.

P.S. Modem and router are one and the same. ISPs and/or Telco generally
don't own the hardware in NZ.

Hi All,
Sorry Jim I should have mentioned that I had already done the firmware
upgrade:) Also thanks to Malke. The only thing I hadn't already tried was
to swap the NIC's but with them both being less than a week old I didn't
think this would be an issue (and as you say it is happening on both
machines).
I think I'll call the 0800 number today and see if Dynalink know anything.

I believe this is related to a microsoft security patch
you're not the only one with this problem, mine's been
ongoing for months, no resolution.
I managed a workaround using an automated program to ping
my ISP connection avery few minutes. I checked everything
I could think of, my ISP service, etc etc etc...
Both W2k and XP are affected ( I have a multiple boot
system) XP W2k and ME only ME is not affected.
I can't trace it down to a specific security patch, but
it's my belief it's due to that, I've read other posts on
this forum with the same problem, at least 4-5 in the last
few months..
