when I right click on a folder my first open in the drop
down menu is SEARCH - how do I change it to make my first
option OPEN?

They are popup menus not drop down. Click to pop up.

Drop down menus can be simulated. Click any menu then move to another menu next to it. The 2nd and subsequent menus is how drop down menus work all the time. That is no clicking to display the menu.

The other major type of menus is pull down, left mouse button down, drag the mouse down to the item you want, release the left mouse button.

Window's menus are dual popup/pull down. Drop down is not used. OSs like GEM used drop down. Pull down is best if familar with the menu concerned. Popup is best if one is searching for a menu item. Obviously someone thought drop down was a good idea. But not many agreed.

Sub menus were introduced in 95. These are drop down menus.

Here's a small article on why they are bad.
