drivers driving me mad

Running XP Home.

I am having a serious problem with my monitor/graphics card, the screen just
goes completely black and then after about 1 minute restarts the computer with a
description of the error and the option to start in safe mode.

I KNOW that the problem is with the display adapter - Nvidia GeForce 2 MX 400
and the only way I can use my PC is to disable it in the device manager. My PC
then works but the display is somewhat sluggish and video won't play properly
at all. I have downloaded and installed the latest drivers, but as soon as I
enable the graphics card the screen goes black etc...

The PC helpline have advised me that the problem is one of the following :-
Graphics card driver (don't think so, got latest driver installed)
Monitor Driver (could be as monitor does not show in device manager)
The Monitor is a Samsung SyncMaster 957DF but I cannot locate any drivers for
it on the net
Chipset driver (I have no idea what that is)

If anyone knows how to fix this annoying problem, please let me know as it is
driving me mad - I've been working on solving it for 8 hours now non-stop.

What is your computer? Based on Intel or AMD? Chipset is the peripheral
controllers (north and south bridges) on the motherboard, especially the AGP
controller, usually from either AMD, VIA, nVidia or SiS. Usually the
chipsetdrivers comes with computer/motherboard, but has to be installed
separately. They can usually also be downloaded from chipset makers
homepage.
