Driver update using "Windows Update"

My video card is in the list of supported hardware.



Other XP operating system updates are very simple when using "Windows
Update", just click on the item to be updated and follow the instructions.
But video driver updates are another matter. You usually see instructions
to remove the existing drivers, etc., before installing the new ones. If I
just click to have Windows Update take care of the update, will it
automatically take care of all the necessary chores (stop virus checker,
remove old drivers...), or do I need to do those myself ahead of time?



Advice would be muc appreciated.

Stay as far away as you can from MS's video driver updates, unless you
really like having a screwed up computer!

Use the manufacturer's latest drivers.

You might be better off going to the Mfg. of your hardware's web-site and
downloading drivers from them. A recent NVIDIA update that Windows had
messed up a lot of peoples machines.

I.e. fully automated.

Your expectations would be totally wrong. I doubt that anyone that did
the last nVidia driver update on WU was happy with the resulting mess
that they were left with. Hell half the time I find a driver update on
WU, it's for hardware that's not even in the computer.

I generally get my drivers direct from the manufacturer, as Windows never
seems to select any Driver updates for me, and if it does, they seem to be
for things I don't even have. I must say though, that it did give me an
nVidia driver update recently, and I had no problems - but I soon went for
the latest nVidia display drivers, as I wanted all the features back.

The biggest problem I had was upgrading from nVidia's nForce 2.41 to 2.45
drivers. They removed an ATA service, but didn't remove whatever kept on
trying to start the ATA service when I booted up. I had to disable the
service in Recovery mode before I could even get back into Windows.

Now using the nForce 3.xx drivers, and no problems so far! )
