driver update - source ok grayed out

A Canon 8000F scanner is installed and working. From the net I downloaded a
newer driver. In Device Manager, I select the scanner,
properties/driver/update and get the Hardware Assistant. I select "software
from defined source" and there the second checkbox to navigate to the new
driver. But as soon as I'm picking the appropriate directory, the ok button
is grayed out. What can I do?

Many thank for your help

Is the driver file compressed? Is it a self extracting .exe or a .zip
file? Have you extracted/unzipped it if it is? If it is compressed, after
extracting the files make sure to read the Readme file if included which
should have the instructions for installation.

If it is not compressed, then the drivers are not in the directory/folder
that you browsed to and that is why the ok button isn't selectable.

yes, setupGS.exe extracted to S3305dex.exe, and setupGS.exe removed to
subfolder
make sure to read the Readme file if included which

contains nothing about installation, only about application

Yes it (one only) is there...

I think I had this already some considerable tima ago as well, but I don't
remember what the solution was - I probably just left it as is.

But it doesn't appear to be a problem of the driver as such, since the
graying out happens immediately on selecting the directory, and the hardware
assistant is unlikely to be able to judge the S3305dex.exe as invalid. It
rather appears as a matter of some circumstances within XP.

I tried to just start S3305dex.exe, but nothing happened, so it's probably
not the intended procedure. The driver interface still shows the old version
number.

Are you sure you downloaded the correct drivers? What I found at Canon's
site for your scanner and XP are two downloads, both of which when
extracted have driver version 1.2.1.

Scangear CS - 8000F8120WNEN.exe v 8.1.2.1 which extracted to a folder
8000F8120WNEN. There is also a .pdf file on the same site page as the
download for this file that clearly states the scanner be disconnected
before installing the driver.
From the .pdf: 8000F_Install_Procedure.pdf
<quote>
Note: Make sure to disconnect the scanner from the PC when installing
downloaded ScanGear CS. For Windows 2000 or Windows XP, make sure to log
in by Administrator address when installing the software.
</quote>

The second download is:
WIADriver8000F.exe v 8.1.2.1 which also extracted to a folder with the same
name minus the extension as stated on the same site page as the download.
From the site:
<quote>
CanoScan 8000F Scanner WIA Driver for Windows XP
- Driver and application software files have been compressed.
The following instructions show you how to download the compressed files
and decompress them.

1. To download files, click the file link, select [Save], and specify the
directory where you want to save the file. The download will start
automatically.
2. Downloaded files are saved in the specified folder in a self-extracting
form (.exe format).
3. If double-click the files to decompress them, a new folder will be
created in the same folder.
New folder has the same name with the decompressed file.
4. Double-click the decompressed Setup.exe file. to start installation
contains nothing about installation, only about application

It also states aside from other issues that the CS drive and WIA driver
Cannot be installed on the same system for the same scanner.
Yes it (one only) is there...

It's not an XP issue, you simply cannot click OK because the driver
install files are inside the installation exe, this goes for both driver
downloads. If the files are in an install exe No Windows can see them.
After extracting the download I had a peek inside the install exe's and
that is where the .inf files are along with other files. Now if you care
to you can extract those files from the install file and try to install
from DM, however that is not mentioned in Canons suggested installation.
I tried to just start S3305dex.exe, but nothing happened, so it's
probably

version
number.

That file wasn't in either download I checked into here. That number
doesn't even match the scanner model you posted.

Hi Brian

Many thanks for your very great effort!
I printed and read your previous message, but to no avail.

Whereever I enter Canon (.com, .ch. .de), I inevitably land on
http://de.software.canon-europe/software/scangear_css12593.asp?model=
where I select the 8000F and Win XP
to be offered Scangear CS Version 8.1.2.0 dated 18/8/2003
named S3305dex.exe

(The just mentioned site appears as not directly accessible
on entering the URL in the browser)

After download, I start S3305dex.exe
to a temporary folder, this then containing setupSG.exe
and a Readme.txt in German containing only application issues
as mentionned before.

Clicking on setupSG.exe (while scanner is off),
an expanding progress indicator is shown,
with no option to select where to.
I can't even find out where it expands to.
But no other recognizable effect is apparent.

After reconnecting the scanner,
in dev mgr still the old driver 8.1.0.1 is shown.

And the dev mgr driver update option leads to
the graying out of the ok button as per my original message.

***********
I mean, Canon might sell very good hard- and software,
but they appear as not to be able to organize themselves.
Some time ago, I used their printer S750, and I had to
convince them that they had the wrong driver update on the net.
They then sent me a handmade CD with a useable driver...
***********

I now will approache their hotline,
I wonder what set of new experiences is waiting for me there there...

Any more ideas?
Thanks again

See if this works, if not we'll go another route.

Hi Brian

I missed the notifications for your followup mails.

In the meantime, I approached Canon hotline, but only
the third person spoken to has been able to solve the problem.

It has been suggested that the problem may pertain to SP2 of XP,
but this is not verified.

It is that easy:

1. Disconnect scanner USB

2. Use the uninstall utility from their website s5800mux.exe,
expanded it to produce Deldrv.exe and run

3. Download S3305dex.exe,
expand it to produce SetupSG.exe and run

4. Connect scanner USB
Dev Mgr/Imaging devices/Canon 8000F/right click/properties/driver
shows the new version 8.1.2.0

Mind you, this refers to the German versions of all software
and need not apply to all others.
And it refers to the scanner driver ScanGear only,
as I do not use the bundeled applications.

Unfortunately, Canon did not see any necessity to add
a 10 lines install readme file to tell customers what to do,
while all other standard procedures do not work...

Brian, thanks again

Glad to hear you sorted things out Flowe.

It's to bad Canon feels there is no need to include the instructions,
hell, they could even add it to the readme they already include.
Unfortunate you had to go through 3, Ahem hack hack, "tech support", cough
hack, persons before getting it resolved. Perhaps that's why they don't
include instructions, they get more money keeping you on the line.

Just to set the record straight:

The Canon Hotline here is complimentary. With the first call I
got a case number the person taking the second call picked up.
This person decided that she could not solve the problem either
and would relay it to a technician who would ring me back, he
doing so within the hour and actually solving the case within
a couple of minutes.

So all is very decent. But imagine the effort on both sides, and
imagine the number of failing, disappointed and lost customers,
and what they all tell their friends and acquaintances.

The job of making hard- and software would be that much easier
if there were none of those curious and exacting customers!
But I don't think we will change the way it works.

Thanks again
