Good morning everyone,

I am thinking about purchasing driver update software that will keep
everything updated, I am just wondering if anyone has any
recommendations out of all the software that is available?

TIA,

Ron

It is very rarely that drivers need updates, I would not add it to my
pc.
What is your reason for doing so?

They're a complete waste of time. Used to be a good idea, but most
hardware drivers are built into the system these days, and those that
aren't are supplied with the product when you buy it and it's a simple
thing to visit the manufacturer's website to see if anything new is
available.

Most of the time even that's not necessary: if it ain't broke, don't
fix it.

It is just a thought when I was cleaning up my system, of all the
app's that I have installed I was thinking that it would be easier to
use a single app rather than going to each website to find out if
there are any updates.

Driver do not normally have updates all the time. Also, several
"updated" drivers can break the Windows.

This type of software is useless!!!

You quote "all of the app's that I have" but you say drivers. If it's
apps you are interested in then version tracker
http://www.versiontracker.com/windows/ might do your thing. I tried
the trial version. It works but won't let you view the list properly.
But what I could see it works but its a bit too technical.
If you have version 10.0.0.010 software and it finds 10.0.0.011 it says
you are out of date. Me myself and I, I would like to have an
adjustement that it only show me revision 2 decimals down. I doubt in
this example the revision is that big.

I only offer it as a possible. Its not shareware.

Check the Support/Download pages of your computer manufacturer or the driver
manufacturer instead, Ron. Whatever you do, I would NOT recommend
installing any driver updates offered to the WinXP machine by Windows
Update.

I second this! Stay away from all Windows Update driver update unless
you want to crash your Windows XP fast (Personal experience!!!!)

Drivers have nothing to do with the applications you have installed, either
way such software is a waste of money.

Thanks everyone for your advice, I think I will just stick with the
Dell website if/when I fell frisky...

Thanks again,

Ron

Is there is room for a "third?" Personal experience - Windows update is a
sure way to generate a migraine. ;)

I too have a dell, An Inspiron 6000. Dell says I have the latest
drivers but that version tracker software says a lot of my dell drivers
are out of date. I have a feeling they are looking at their own
database indicating model X from vendor Y and it should be version Z.
And Dell does not support that version of software.

So you can see my reluctance to use the version tracker program. It
points me IMHO to the wrong places.

Check with Dell Support, Ron. IIRC, there's a Dell utility you can install
that will notify you if & when appropriate driver, BIOS, etc., updates are
available.

Or he can just periodically check in at the Dell support site and see what
new drivers have been added. One thing often lacking there (and at other
driver sites, too) is some extensive documentation of all that has been
added (or corrected) to the newer drivers (i.e., usually you see a very
short note, or nothing at all)
