Drive letter wrong assigned to USB flash

It is known that on some XP (pro) PC which have some network drives mapped,
plugging in an USB flash memory can lead to the situation that an already
used drive letter will be assigned to it. Thus, there is no way to access
it.

The solution is to go in the drive manager and assign a new, free, letter.
But how is the guarantie that this setitng will remain? I had shortly a case
where after a few weeks this assignment was lost and must be done again.

One thing:

be sure the device is always plugged into the same USB port

Or, mount the usb volume to an existing folderpath you can brows to.
Then No drive letter is needed to acces the usb flash drive.
