Have a Dimension 8300 with WinXP Pro. When I plug in a new
USB flash drive (the pocket variety) that has never been
plugged into this machine, I cannot see the flash drive via
My Computer. If I go to Disk Management, I can see the new
flash drive but with no drive letter assigned. So I assign a
drive letter to the new flash drive and then I can see it in
My Computer. So I now have two flash drives (say #1 and #2),
and #1 is assigned letter M and #2 is assigned letter O.
To add a bit more information, I have a mapped network drive
on H. The first time I plugged in flash drive unit #1, it
was actually assigned to drive H, but subsequently in My
Computer drive H: still pointed to the mapped network drive
(assume this was a conflict of some sort). That is when I
had to assign the flash drive with a different drive letter.
Questions:
1. Why is the drive letter not assigned automatically?
2. Why do I have to assign separate drive letters for each
different flash drive?
3. How can I fix this problem?
