Dreaded Error Message

Hi,

Sometimes, when trying to install a program (on Windows XP/SP2), I receive
this message: "xxx.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are
sorry for the inconvenience." I also have the option to send or not send the
error report. Since this doesn't happen much, I'm guessing there is a
conflict with some other software installed on my machine. Could there be a
generic conflict that interferes with the installation of only certain
programs? Are there any software developement tools/debuggers that could help
to isolate the conflict? Thank you so much for any help.

On my computer, it is more like a disagreement among loading files as to
which file gets in first. I have two files that have this problem,
occasionally getting konked out of the way during loading. On both of these
programs, I had early on, tried to adjust what their 'home links' were
showing. So these two starting files are in the process of vying for first
place but are too busy looking for further instructions and lose their place
in the lineup - just like the old school playground. They'll load the next
time. I'd like to hear from an MVP.

Apology here. Before I saw the previous note, I did not see the google
reference which showed several items, one of which was a Microsoft item
regarding the xxx in the file name. I thought the original question was
letting the xxx represent 'any particular file name' and so erred in my
answer. I didn't understand that the xxx was actually the file name. The
files on my computer that I get the runtime error on are part of a program's
tasking system which I apparently damaged myself by disabling an icon.
