Dragging Icon Drops In Wrong Location

Chris

When I drag a desktop icon, it doesn't drop in the location it is
currently displaying at. Instead, it drops such that the center of the
icon is at the point of the mouse pointer--even if I'm dragging the icon
by the edge.

This means that I have to ignore where the icon is actually displaying,
and instead imagine where it will be when dropped, based on where the
mouse pointer is. Obviously this is very frustrating, as the only way
to properly locate the icon is to first try to grab it in the exact
center. Anyone experienced this, or have any thoughts?

Thanks,
Chris

Dear Chris,

Thanks for your post.

I am not clear about the symptoms. As I understand it, you did not select
"Align To Grid" but the icon dragging still operates in that way as if it
is selected. Am I correct?

Please let me know the following:

1. When did the problem begin to occur? Did you encounter this issue right
after you installed Windows XP, or after you changed certain
software/hardware configurations?

2. Does the problem occur in Safe Mode? To go into Safe Mode, restart the
computer, press the F8 key when the boot menu pops up, select [Safe Mode],
boot up, and check if the issue still occurs.

3. Please perform a clean boot test. To do so, please run MSCONFIG, in the
Services tab, click "Hide All Microsoft Services" and click "Disable All".
Then browse to the Startup tab, click "Disable All". Click OK and reboot
the system to a clean-booted environment (this will temporarily prevent
third-party programs from running automatically during start-up.) Does the
problem still exist?

(NOTE: To turn these services/programs back on, just run "msconfig.exe"
again and click "Enable All" in the Services tab and the Startup tab.)

Please let me know the results. Thanks!

Joe Wu
