For some reason, I just started having trouble with downloading .pdf files.
When I click on the download item, I get a blank page with a small box with
an x in it in the upper left hand corner. What does this mean?

Try clearing your Temporary Internet Files. Go to Control Panel->Internet
Options and on the General Tab click the button to "Delete Files"
