Downloading zip files with XP SP2

BIGEYE

When I download zip files with XP Pro & SP2 installed, the files download to
a temporary folder 'somewhere' and when download is complete my file manager
(Powerdesk Pro) opens up. But I cant fnd the downloaded files anywhere.
How do I get XP to ask where to save the files before they are downloaded
into space never to be found.
TIA

Hi,

Generally the downloads occur in either a temp folder or the Temporary
Internet Files folder, then they are transferred to the location indicated
by your initial selection when prompted for downloading. If you are not
getting prompted, try right-clickikng the download link and using "save
target as".

You can use the browse button before it extracts the file(s),then seleclt
desktop.
But you can also get to those files just as easy,go to run, type:%Temp%
Sometimes its:%temp% 1 or both will work.

OK BIGEYE, this might solve your problem.

1. If you are running as administrator check the following:
my computer\tools\folder options\file types. Select the zip extension then
select advanced and make sure there is a check in the "confirm open after
download" box.

2. I have an administrator and limited user setup. I use the administrator
to make various changes to my system with my DSL disabled. I use my limited
user when browsing the Internet and downloading files. I noticed this same
problem when I was using the limited user to download zip files. When
testing with the administrator account the download would work normally
allowing me to select where to download. When using the limited user account
the OS does not allow access to the advanced section of the file types.
After a lot of trial and error attempts I decided to change the limited
account to an administrative account to see if the "confirm open after
download" was checked and to see if the download process worked as it
should. The box was checked and had no problem with downloading zip files.
For some unknown reason by doing this and then changing the account back to
a limited user account the download process now worked normally. Out of
curiosity I went back to a previous setup using ghost to see if I could
duplicate the problem and sure enough I had the same problem and was able to
fix it as stated above. Sometimes computers can really act weird bless their
little hearts.
