Problems downloading big files in Windows XP

I'm having problems downloading big files in Windows XP with SP2.
Configs are Pentium III 797 MHz, 128MB RAM, 40GB HDD.
When i try to download certain files things usually start o.k. but then
suddenly the downloaded
file will show it's completed, e.g., when downloading a 75Mb file it
gets to about 20Mb when suddenly the progress bar will shoot along to
the end and state the download is complete. Needless to say when I
subsequently click on the file it comes up as being corrupt. So this
prevents me from getting important files downloaded. A download
accelartor didnt help either, and besides download accelerators are not
allowed in many file uploading sites. I hace notices that it usually
always happens only after abt 20-25 MB have been downloaded.
I have a cable connection.

I wud appreaciate if some1 cud pls help me with this.

This is usually a problem with the server you are downloading from. If you
try the download again and it does complete fully, the fault lies with the
site you are downloading from. 75 MB is nothing to download, I average about
5 GB a day. I sometimes have the problem you describe when I use certain
sites, if I try again one or more times the download does complete fully.

Thank you John and Geminate for your prompt replies.
I shall try firefox with the extension you have mentioned. But did you
have the same problem John before you tried what you have suggested?
Geminate, the problem is that this has happened on several sites and be
it any file, if it is more than abt 25 MB, this just HAS TO happen. I
have tried and retried several times, but it never does complete. So I
realised the problem is something deeper, not with the file or the
server/site.
Once again I thank you for helping me out.

Have been using Opera browser which has a built in resume for years,
Firefox & Opera have been my choices for years & once DownThemAll
became available, use Firefox most of the time.
Once DownThemAll is installed, try downloading the normal way, also, be
aware that you have options available when you right click.
