Downloading Updates Problem

I have a wireless connection and am on a laptop. Microsoft
AnitSpyware won't let me connect to download the updates.
It keeps saying connection unavailable and wont allow me to
connect to the "help" file contained inside the AntiSpyware
of which uses the internet to connect to. If anyone can
help please do. Thanks.

Windows version?

Is your firewall configured to allow MSAS to connect to the internet?

I also have the same problem. Mine is also a laptop with
a wireless connection. Currently we have Symantec
antivirus corporation edition (full version 8.00.9374)
installed. Is there a way to get new updates? Thanks,

I use xp with service pack 1. I'm not sure if the
firewall is configured correctly. How do I check the
setting and change it ,if necessary? Thanks.

There shouldn't be any configuration necessary with the XP firewall.

Have you checked to see whether the automatic update function works?

Access to the help file shouldn't require Internet access as far as I'm
aware--can you say more about what happens when you try to open Help?

Automatic update is checked, but not running when its
suppose to. I unchecked it and tried running a manual
update and got the same results(WARNING, COULD NOT
CONNECT TO THE INTERNET!) The last spyware definitions is
dated 1/12/2005

Well - you can update to 5685 by downloading and reinstalling.

However, current definitions are at 5687.

What about the firewall question--are you running an Internet security suite
that might include a firewall?

You can leave auto-update checked and still test the manual update.

Have you checked your updated version? Click on "Microsoft
AntiSpyware>Help>About Microsoft AntiSpyWare and select
diagnostics. There is a lot of information about your
system as well as your version.

Microsoft AntiSpyware Version: 1.0.501

This is my updated version of the definition: Spyware
Definition Version: 5685 (2/9/2005 7:18:48 AM). It is
displayed on the main properties windows on the fourth
line after you select "Help>About Microsoft AntiSpyWare".

At this time the software is not able to connect manually
for updated versions. It too is displaying the warning.
But somehow the product was automatically updated by
itself overnight. Play with it and let us know what you
have learned.

My laptop is protected/managed by Symantec system center
and protection settings administed by a network
administor. Could this be the problem?? If so is there a
way around it??

Perhaps. Go to Microsoft Antispyware , and hit Help. Search on "firewall
ports" as a key.

That should give you a page showing both the necessary outbound ports
needed, and the specific executables that need to be allowed to connect
outbound. I'm not familiar with Symantec System center, so I'm not sure
exactly what's needed--but the information in Help should be enough to show
to the administrator.
