Does microsoft have a site where SP 2 can be downloaded and installed later
on another computer? I have found a site that is for IT Professionals but
the patch is almost 300 mb, and is not recommended for a single upgrade.

That is the patch for use on multiple machines after downloading it.

We say not recommended for a SINGLE upgrade as it is 300MB and a single
machine may be better off using Windows/Automatic Update where only the
files required by that specific machine are downloaded.

Use the site you found if you have broadband! The download is 266MB because
it has an update scan engine plus all the changes since XP was issued. In my
area, Staples and Circuit City have a free CD available of this file.

Hi

I'm not so sure about that "may be better off using WU/AU", the only
thing I can see as positive with this method compared to downloading
the 266 MB standalone version is that the download size is "only"
80-120 MB. If you get the SP2 CD instead (containing the 266 MB file),
even this argument is moot.

I have seen reports where a WU/AU SP2 installation have failed (after
the WU/AU download is finished and the actual SP2 installation has
started), and then using the 266 MB SP2 file instead (on the same
computer), SP2 installed successfully. The other way around (full SP2
failing, then WU/AU succeeding) have I never seen any reports on.

Personally, I always recommend people to install SP2 using the 266 MB
SP2 file either from the SP2 CD or from the MS download center if they
have access to a fast internet connection. Also, this way, they don't
need to download SP2 again if they need to reinstall SP2 later on.

Save yourself a lot of trouble:
Order the CD here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/updates/sp2/cdorder/en_us/default.mspx

Despite what it says about shipping time, you may receive the CD
within 2 weeks or less.
Cost for the CD? $0
Cost for shipping? $0
Pretty good deal, if I do say so myself.

If you have a broadband connection (640kbps at minimum), download it
within an hour or less here: (ignore what it says about "don't
download for a single computer")

Torgeir ,

My personal preference follows yours, but for some dial up users (that have
no access to a high speed connection or anyone with one and they don't want
to order the CD or get to from one of the other outlets) the option of using
BITS and WU/AU may be a better option if they are cost sensitive to dial up
time etc.

I use the IT version. It does detect what patches are
required by the home user in most cases. It is 266mb. The
advantage to dl & burn to a CD is you have it later if you
need to reinstall wxp in off line due to other problems.

In 2 Timothy 3:1-7, there is a list of the qualities that
Unregenerate man will have in the last days. Is your quality
found there? If So, don't despair - Christ came to save His
people.
