Download problem - registry issue?

M

ms

I use Firefox as a browser, usually downloads are no problem. In daily cold
boots, sometimes problems show up.

Several weeks ago, when I doubleclick on a download link, instead of the
download starting, a new page blank page opens. I now have to always
rightclick and "save link as", then the download proceeds normally.

I cleaned Firefox out of registry, reinstalled, no luck.

This is not a browser problem, it is a key in the W2K registry unrelated to
Firefox, as above, I had removed it from registry.

Advice?

I guess you folks feel this is a browser issue, not OS.

The browser install worked for months.

One day, this issue started.

I removed all entries of the browser from registry.

I reinstalled the same browser file that worked fine before.

I still have the problem.

The browser install file was not corrupted, it is not known to develop
this problem over time.

Therefore, I suspect the OS.

Is there a problem with this logic?

Firefox is pretty much independent of the registry, so settings there are
not likely to have much effect on it. Do you have automatic updates
enabled? Was your system updated between the time FF last worked abd the
time it no longer worked correctly? Do you really double-click on the
link to start a download? Does the same thing happen if you click only
once?

Thanks for responding, Gary.

About 19 entries.
Do you have automatic updates enabled?
No

No

Yes, just a habit, but it did always work.
Does the same thing happen if you click only once?

Yes

I got an answer on the Firefox forum, but the first fix didn't help, the
second fix is quite complex- new profile, etc.

If you have any thoughts, glad to hear them.

That's about exhausted my ideas. I don't have this problem on my system
and thought it might be related to the installation of the KB925902
update, which has been associated with a number of problems.
